Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
