Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Genius in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio

The feeling at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful this past Saturday. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had let in a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Unraveling?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or was there ever any cohesion keeping it intact to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, but then he to later acknowledge that the management had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Speculation that he could resign were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

Lazio were just as chaotic on the pitch as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining first five games, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it has been hard to ascertain if progress is being made or collapsing.

Matteo's Unforeseen Comeback

One individual remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this season. He spent last season on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his parent club were advocating for him to extend his stay a while longer. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to weaken their team lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league with the club in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Uncovering His Natural Fit

Perhaps the manager was persistently working to work out the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
